To All The Undecided and On-Limbo Grads

Filed under: Uncategorized — delamar @ 2:35 pm

I once had the distinct pleasure of being served by a waiter who was quite passionate about what he chose to do for a living. Rare, right? Usually people get into waitering/waitressing because it is one of the easiest jobs to get. Just look up most Hollywood stars and most of them, at one point or another, had done some waitressing to pay the bills and tide them over before their big break into celebritydom. No one grows up wanting to be a waiter or waitress. It is not in the list of ambitions our parents fed us to want to be. But this guy, he loved what he did for a living and it showed. If you ask him what is good on the menu, he will give you a detailed albeit not boring list of reasons why you should choose the pasta over the steak that particular day. He always served you with a smile. He seemed genuinely happy to see you walk in. He remembers what you like and what you don’t like and will anticipate it as soon as you arrive. He remembered one time I didn’t like onions in my salad and when he took my order he asked me if he should ask the chef to hold the onions. And this treatment wasn’t specific to me because I am a girl or some sort of personality, I saw him with other customers and he was just as enthusiastic about making sure they had a pleasurable time with their meals.

After another good meal, I started to chat him up. He was very friendly and warm and I was entertained with his conversation. Something that is again…rare. He excused himself with ease if another customer needed him for something. And then he’d come back and pick up the conversation where you left off. It was such a pleasure to be waited on by someone who had the heart of a servant, and who actually liked being a waiter. He wasn’t just someone who took your order, told the chef what you wanted, and presented you the bill when you were done eating. He took pleasure in waiting on you while you enjoyed the food he served. He wanted you to have a great time in their restaurant. The man went well beyond his duties as a server. As such, the  brief, daily, cursory obligation that was lunch or dinner took on to mean so much more than just meal.  It was a really great time!

That experience made me acutely aware that it hardly matters what you do for a living or what you choose for a career in this world, as long as it is something you can throw yourself into and enjoy. Yes, of course we want high paying jobs. Yes, of course we want to achieve success with the  financial gains that come along with it. And yes, we want to have a certain amount of distinction for what we have chosen for a career. But, it is my belief, that in the great scheme of things, what we do is not the point of having a career or a job. The point is to throw yourself into something and get to know life better and enjoy life through what you have chosen to do. And knowing life better is really about knowing ourselves better.

I don’t want to pontificate. I just want to write this for all the graduates who are in the crossroads of their life…for those who are still undecided on what to do with the rest of their lives EVEN with a degree in hand. Maybe these thoughts help…

When I graduated from my four-year course in university, I remember asking: “Four years of education, but what exactly am I good for?” and “Diploma accomplished. Now what?” Well, whatever it is that you will end up choosing… or whatever gets forced upon you by life and circumstance, the hope is that it will be a career that will bring you happiness, fulfillment, financial gain, and the distinction we all want at the end of the day.

Let me end this post with a quote from the movie “Without Limits” that starred Billy Crudup (Prefontaine) and Donald Sutherland (Bill Bowerman, founder of Nike). The movie is based on the life of runner Steve Prefontaine and his relationship with his coach. Enjoy!

“Men of Oregon, I invite you to become students of your events. Running, one might say, is basically an absurd pastime upon which to be exhausting ourselves. But if you can find meaning in the kind of running you have to do to stay on this team…chances are you can find meaning in another absurd pastime: Life.”

  5. Wow. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. I’m not a new grad. But at one point in my life, I feel the struggle on this thing called life; most especially if it concerns one’s career path.

Still, life is good cause it offers us a lot of things.

    • yeah, i was truly scared when i graduated. it felt like after a then-lifetime of graduating from one level to another…grade 1 then 2 then 3 and so forth…i didn’t know where to go after graduating. and then the longest summer job i ever had: as an RX on air staff! i was just a temp but ended up staying!

  6. hi delamar. i agree with what you have posted. like what the smokey mountain song mentioned “not all the world is America, the world is where you are”, it lies within one’s self to make the most of what life has to offer. self-fulfillment is more important than the high-paying career that we all aspire for. i am not saying that a career ain’t important; what i am delving at is that there is something more important in life than the number of zeroes in your paycheck. money is something, but it is not everything.

  7. Indeed, you have a fountain of words and thoughts to share – one of the many reasons why I love reading your blog. You’re right, Delle, what matters is how much we enjoy and love the things that we do. Maybe my course and my job was a mismatch but I’m enjoying what I do for a living. It might not give me nice cars and mansions but I’m learning a lot from it. For me, life teaches me that you don’t need a lot of this and that to find true happiness. It’s just a matter of seeing and be thankful for all the blessings instead of complaining, because, after all, life is what you make it.
And I’m going to share this thoughts to my sister since she is a newly-graduate.

  8. I saw this quote from Francesca Reigler, “Happiness is an attitude. We either make ourselves miserable, or happy and strong. The amount of work is the same.”
This one from Howard Newton, “People forget how fast you did a job – but they remember how well you did it.”
And from Harvey MacKay, “Find something you love to do and you’ll never have to work a day in your life.”
But my favorite of all came from Reba McEntire, “To succeed in life, you need three things: a wishbone, a backbone and a funnybone.”
    Cheers! 🙂

  14. If it would be ok, it would be a pleasure of mine to meet this guy in person. what you have shared at your blog Del is definitely one of the “rarest” qualities of a waiter. His courage and passion is an inspiration, success is something you can carry on without the big bucks, without the big house, without the nice sports car, without much money…but what the heck, He loves what he is doing, and for that he is successful enough!

More power to him! Eye opener… live, love, learn.

  16. On my opinion, I think it depends on whether you can afford to have or to be in your dream job. Like me, when I was in college, I used to work (part-time) for a fast food chain and I was really enjoying it. I enjoy meeting/seeing/chatting with different people everyday. So I told myself, after graduation, I want to work as a Manager for this food chain. But I learned that the pay will not be enough to raise my daughter. I am a single mom. I worked really hard to graduate from college and have a better job so that I could support my child. Well, in fairness to where I am currently employed, I am able to send my daughter to private school and provide her basic needs. This (job) may not be my first love but it has its way for making me stay.

Ps. I am a big fan of you and Chico eversince highschool. I have been a silent rusher but now I am trying to expose myself by sending entries to the Top 10 from time to time, but still was not able to get thsrough (hindi ako naakapasa sa panlasa nyo sa pag pili ng entry eh).

Thanks and regards to Chico! =)

  21. I can relate with Dikya02.

I dreamt of being a pilot, but due to family’s financial insufficiency, I wasn’t able to become what I wanted to be. What I finished may be categorized as a “second choice”, but this second choice is more than a blessing in disguise for me.

I may be earning more than what I expected and brought me to places I only read in the books, but the longing is still there to become what I really want to be.

Until fate has totally sealed my dream in a box.

Fortunate are those who can study because they have the resources, but it saddens me when they put their chance to waste.

  24. Delamar, Delamar… What a strong FART! For some weird reason, it’s addicting and strange as it may sound, I’m loving the smell of it… lol. On a serious note, That’s a great insight! With the way things are working now, people are being deprived of enjoying their jobs. It’s now all about the money. You can’t blame them though, life is tough. But I envy those people who, inspite of the limited financial returns, can still say that they look forward for another day at work not because they needed it but because they enjoy it. It takes a lot of joy at work to be able to share that joy to your customers. Like a cup, you need to have it filled with coffee before it spills out and touch others — that will definitely create an impact. (hahaha… what a way to put that in words). I miss enjoying work and not complaining that the weekend is soooo short.

  35. Delle, I am so blessed by your blog entry.

My first love was arts and music. I was a three-time division level poster making champion in high school here in Mandaluyong, a two-time NCR level champion and one-time National level champion in a poster making contest held in Davao. Despite all my achievements in art contests, I decided to take up BS Accountancy in College. This is mainly for me and our family’s security. (I’m still single, I’m referring to my parents) and after five years of nerve-wracking class room computations, I graduated Magan Cum Laude in FEU. A year after, I passed the CPA board exam. After 6 years of studying and being on top of the Accountancy profession, my love for arts still haunts me. So I decided to take up a course in 3d Animation every Saturday. I’m not sure of the possible outcome of my actions but currently, I’m feeling the happiness that has long been devoid in me because of Accounting.

At the age of 24, I’ve learned a major lesson in life that I can share with my future kids: Money is not eveything. Don’t choose a career just because you need it’s financial security. Study and pursue what makes you happy and money will follow.

Please remember my name when I text or call Rx, This is Rayadh aka Pancakes. =)

    Thanks Delle.

It was scary at first… imagine leaving your comfort zone and all, but now, I can say that I’m a better person for making the change. Bonus pa because a lot of people have been telling me since then that they admire my courage to pursue my passion, foregoing a supposedly better position. Sarap ng feeling. =) Nice, nice, Delle! Keep ’em brain farts goin’ beybeh!!! LOL *Hugs*

  40. Hi Delle. Your story about the waiter is indeed inspiring. I hope you told the restaurant manager about your experiences and impression on the waiter. It might help give the waiter a just compensation or a reward, don’t you think?

    • that story was from a long time ago. about 8 years ago. and the resto is already closed. still it was a good experience so i thought i’d share it. 🙂

      • Aw, shucks. Well, the daydreamer in me says the waiter is either: a) the owner of a successful restaurant; b) the maitre d’ of a first-class hotel restaurant; c)the host of his own international cooking show. Hehehe. Wala lang. Happy thoughts…happy thoughts…

  41. hello delamar! i just heard today on e-radio that you have this brain farts, and i googled it right away. i seldom catch your show since i left last year. thank you for this brain fart. i’m taking it all in 🙂 it helped me feel a little better. you see, i am 25, and am still lost, i have nothing which you can call a career. waaaah. yes i have a job that pays well pero i seem lost and empty. “gusto ko lang naman lumigaya” 🙂 but i am grateful for many other things–especially having my family and friends.

thanks again delamar 🙂 i enjoy your blog as much as chico’s, but in a totally different way. (ang haba na ng sinulat ko, sorry!)
